Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Rust streaks down the chimney chase. Gelco’s stainless caps are 304-grade and don’t rust, but the hardware sometimes isn’t. If the original installer used generic zinc screws or a galvanized mounting ring instead of stainless hardware, those components will corrode in Fairfax’s humid summers and leave reddish staining that looks like the cap itself is failing when it actually just needs new fasteners.
• Water in the firebox after rain. This means the cap’s hood is cracked, the mesh has torn, or the cap has shifted enough to let rain fall directly down the flue.
