• Efflorescence or white staining down the chimney brick below the crown. Water is moving through the crown and carrying dissolved salts out through the masonry face. If the brick below the crown is white while the rest of the chimney is not, the crown is the source.
• Water in the firebox after a heavy Fairfax thunderstorm. Not always the crown. But when the crown is failed, rain pools on it, runs down the flue tile exterior, and presents as dampness at the smoke shelf or firebox floor within hours.
