If you are not sure whether your crown uses Gelco material, the label is usually gone by now. Here is the check that actually matters. We look at the crown thickness, the overhang, and the slump of the surface. Original Gelco crowns were typically poured at two to two-and-a-half inches thick at the edge, with a one-and-a-half to two-inch overhang. If what you have matches that profile and it is the original crown from a 1985-to-2010 build, Gelco-compatible repair material is the right match. The OEM versus aftermarket question is straightforward. We use genuine Gelco CrownCoat because it is designed to bond to existing Gelco pours. Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing

• Hairline cracking across the crown surface. This is the first failure mode we see. Gelco crowns crack when water seeps in, freezes at night, and expands the fracture. Fairfax winters are built for this: daytime thaws refill the crack, nighttime freezes widen it.
• White efflorescence on the brick below the crown. That chalky white staining means water is moving through the masonry and carrying out salts as it evaporates. It is a sign the crown is passing water into the chimney structure.
• Spalling brick faces near the top of the stack. Spalling is when the brick face pops off in layers. It happens because the brick is absorbing water the crown should have shed. By the time you see this, the crown has been failing for two or three years in this climate.
• Visible overhang loss or crown edge recession. Gelco crowns that were poured thin at the edge erode back, shrinking the overhang. Water starts running straight down the brick instead of dripping off the crown lip. You can see this from the ground with a decent pair of binoculars.
• Water staining on the ceiling around the chimney chase or fireplace. This is the late-stage symptom. The water has traveled through the crown, into the brick, and down to the drywall or framing. At this point the crown repair is still the right fix, but you may also have some interior repair work to scope.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect your own crown from the ground with binoculars. Look for visible cracking, missing edges, or white staining on the brick below the crown. What you should not do is get on the roof chasing a repair. Chimney crown work means standing at the top of a roof, usually working at height over a sloped surface, often with mortar dust and wet material underfoot. That is how a small crack turns into a hospital bill. The other honest truth: the Gelco CrownCoat product is not sold at home centers. What you find on a hardware shelf is a generic elastomeric patch that is not formulated to bond well with an older Gelco pour.
